Cruises and Main Street food
In front of the Loch Shiel Hotel a jetty runs out into the water, and from it the Loch Shiel Cruises boats set off up one of Scotland's largest glacial lochs, where golden and white-tailed eagles, hen harriers and red deer are the advertised company. The hotel has eight rooms, a dining room and a sun lounge facing the loch, and a public bar open to anyone who wants one. New management took over in March 2026 and put a chef in the kitchen who cooks to order from local produce. Dogs are welcome, though a table with a dog attached tends to end up in the lounge rather than the restaurant.
Main Street holds most of the day's food. Toast & Tide opened in spring 2026 for breakfast, brunch and lunch: locally caught langoustines, a lobster roll, a jacket potato under Mingary venison, fish tacos, club sandwiches, soup, scones and cakes. A few doors along, East to West Bakery deals in pies, pastries, traybakes, breakfast rolls, toasties and baguette sandwiches, with daily specials and vegan options among them.
Lochside kitchens and Highland paths
For something slower, Ardshealach Lodge sits in gardens fronting the loch, where the host, Jill Gosney, grows much of the fruit and vegetables used in the kitchen. Breakfast alone runs to homemade bread and preserves, kippers, dry-cured bacon, Stornoway black pudding, venison sausages and local free-range eggs. The village store on the A861 covers the rest — off-sales, the post office, takeaway coffee — and stands in as the service centre for this end of Ardnamurchan and Moidart.
The walking is why most people come. From the end of the public road at Doirlinn, the Silver Walk loops three and a half miles round the coast and back inland past Castle Tioram, cliff-cut path, a deserted hamlet and pine-fringed lochans, with Eigg, Muck and Coll out to sea. It takes its name from a hoard of Elizabethan coins turned up when the estate path was built, and Walkhighlands calls it "one of the truly special paths of the Highlands." The coastal section is impassable at very high tides, so check the water before you set out. Longer and rougher, Beinn Resipol climbs 827 metres from Resipole over a boggy, indistinct route to a rocky summit and views across Mull, Coll, Muck, Rum and Eigg.
Castle Tioram and the Jacobite road
Castle Tioram itself stands on a tidal island reached over a sandbar when the water allows. First recorded in a charter of 1372, it was the seat of Clanranald until 1715, when government troops were captured there during the rising and the rebels burned the place rather than leave it to be held. It was never lived in again. A bronze hanging bowl, probably seventh-century, dug from a midden beside it now sits in the West Highland Museum in Fort William.
The Jacobite thread runs on up the road. Prince Charles Edward Stuart spent a week at Kinlochmoidart House in August 1745 before raising his standard at Glenfinnan; the house was burned in reprisal the following year. Seven beech trees were planted there for the seven men who came with him from France, and three of them are still standing.
Telford's church, the loch and onward travel
The parish church of 1829 is a plain rectangular box from Thomas Telford's programme of Highland churches, with cast-iron lattice windows, a gable bellcote and a crenellated entrance to the burial ground that doubles as the war memorial.
The village is spread out rather than gathered, strung along the loch's south-western end where the short River Shiel carries the fresh water down to tidal Loch Moidart. Trains stop at Lochailort, a request halt: to board, give the driver a clear hand signal, and to alight, tell the conductor. Shiel Buses run through to Fort William. In spring the Loch Shiel Festival takes chamber music into the village halls and bothies around the water, as it has since 1997.
