The village story
Fearn: farm stops and Easter Ross routes
The original Travel Fox guide moves from Balmuchy Farm and the two Fearns through local food, wartime traces, rail, coast and community growing.
Farm life and the two Fearns
At Balmuchy Farm there is a vending machine for free-range eggs in several sizes, alongside potatoes brought over from Rosefarm on the far side of the Cromarty Firth. Four alpacas graze within sight — Benny, Malteser, Calipso and Cloudy — and hens are out in the fields. The Egg Box is marked as friendly to children, walkers and cyclists, a good fit for a gentle family stop.
Fearn is the smaller settlement, while the larger Hill of Fearn beside it holds everyday services. Together they form the practical visitor base for this guide.
Village provisions and a nearby inn
Highland Prime / Fearn Village Store is a family-run butcher on Main Road in Hill of Fearn and also serves as the post office. The counter offers handmade sausages, burgers, grill sticks and dry-cured bacon. Most products are additive-free, a gluten-free range is available, and the business sources meat locally where possible. White Cottage Baking Bothy is at White Cottage by Fearn, selling baked treats, cheesecakes, pies, sausage rolls and preserves.
A few miles away at Kildary on the A9, the Shandwick Inn is a traditional rural Highland inn and restaurant serving home-cooked pub food; the same chef has cooked there for twenty years. It has five en-suite rooms, an outside patio and a children's play area, making it a practical family stop.
Political and wartime history
Fearn produced a prime minister: Peter Fraser, who led New Zealand from 1940 to 1949, was born here in 1884, the son of village bootmaker Donald Fraser, and attended Fearn School. His father's shop was a centre for local political discussion.
South of the village lies the former airfield, wartime HMS Owl, with three runways, two control towers and several surviving buildings. The four-storey Royal Navy tower may be the only one of its type left in Scotland, while the surviving landscape is partly reused for farming, offices and vehicle repair.
Rail links, coastal routes and a place to talk
Fearn has its own unstaffed station on the Far North Line, with a waiting room, help point and ten cycle spaces but no toilets. The Stagecoach 23C stops by the old Fearn Hotel and links Fearn with Tain, the service town. Quiet B-roads lead towards Tarbat Ness and the Seaboard Villages; the Loch Eye and Bogbain Woods route reaches Tain, while the coast road leads to Portmahomack and the Pictish carvings at Tarbat Discovery Centre.
Fearn Free Food Garden is a community growing project with a Happy to Chat bench created through a Tain & District Development Trust initiative against loneliness.
