The Fox verdict

A small Great Glen base with a powerful story

Spean Bridge pairs two easy woodland-and-riverside walks with railway character and the landscape of commando remembrance.

Start with the former West Highland railway rooms of the Old Station, watch weaving at Spean Bridge Mill, or follow forest and military-road paths above the River Spean. The village's clearest historical thread runs from recruits arriving by rail to training at Achnacarry and remembrance at the bronze Commando Memorial.

The village story

Spean Bridge Village Guide

Railway rooms, forest paths and commando remembrance meet in a Great Glen village above the River Spean.

Railway Tables and Highland Craft

Trains still pass beside the windows of the Old Station Restaurant, which occupies the booking office and waiting rooms built for the West Highland railway in 1894. The kitchen leans on home cooking, local beer and rare malts, with a beer garden beside the line and burgers made from locally butchered meat carrying the Scotch Beef mark. Old Station Ale and Glen Spean Snowgoose have both been found on the taps, though what is pouring changes week to week. In March 1942 commando recruits were arriving at this same platform before heading on to Achnacarry.

For everyday food there is Faith's Café on the roadside, doing full Scottish breakfasts, bacon rolls, soup and sandwiches. A little further on, Spean Bridge Mill sells knitwear, tartan and gifts, keeps a café, and runs a whisky shop stocking more than 150 Scottish malts. A resident weaver works the Hattersley looms while you browse.

Woodland Paths and High Bridge

The village sits in the Great Glen, above the River Spean, where the land shifts quickly between heather moorland, rough grazing, river gorge and woods of birch, oak and pine. Two walks of roughly equal length start close by. The Commando Memorial and High Bridge circular runs 4.5km with a little over 80 metres of climbing, crossing part of General Wade's military road, the trackbed of the old Invergarry railway and the river itself, with Ben Nevis and the Grey Corries in view. The wooden bridges can be slippery, there is livestock, and the ruined High Bridge is not safe to enter. The Killiechonate Forest figure of eight covers similar ground from the station, through woodland and riverside, with foxgloves along the path in summer.

High Bridge is the reason much of this is here. General Wade threw a high three-arched bridge across the Spean in 1737; Thomas Telford's later crossing superseded it, and the surviving structure now stands incomplete and in poor repair. On 16 August 1745 the first shots of the Jacobite Rising were fired at it. The branch railway to Fort Augustus opened in 1903, never prospered, and closed in 1946 with only a coal train left running; the circular walk follows its trackbed past the remains of a viaduct.

The Commandos' Training Ground

North of the village the ground rises to the Commando Memorial, three bronze figures on a granite plinth by the sculptor Scott Sutherland, unveiled in 1952 and looking out over the Great Glen. During the war some 25,000 Allied volunteers trained at Achnacarry on a twelve-week course using live ammunition, on exercises remembered as the Tarzan Course, the Death Slide and the Toggle Bridge. The inscription reads "United we conquer … This country was their training ground." Beside the monument is a Garden of Remembrance, with a dedicated area for scattering ashes.

Road and Rail Connections

Getting here is straightforward. The station on Station Road is unstaffed — a shelter, some seats, six parking spaces — but trains still serve the station. The A82 passes through on its way up the Great Glen, the A86 heads east from the junction, and Citylink's 919 links the village to Fort William and, the other way, to Inverness.

The Medieval Stone at Kilmonivaig

Kilmonivaig Parish Church, built around 1812, keeps a medieval grave slab carried from the older church that once stood by the river, a site prone to flooding, where a later building collapsed in the 1770s. It is carved with a Highland galley, two lions and vine scrolls, the work of the Iona school of stone carvers, older than the building that now shelters it.
