Why Stay in Northamptonshire
Northamptonshire is a county of surprising contrasts, often overlooked but richly rewarding for those who take the time to explore it. Forget dramatic mountains or rugged coastlines; this is England’s rolling countryside at its most gentle and historic. Think honey-coloured stone villages, wide open skies, and a pace of life that encourages you to slow down and breathe. It's a place where history feels present – from Roman remains to stately homes – but isn't overwhelming, blending seamlessly with modern life.
The character of Northamptonshire is one of understated elegance and rural charm. You’ll find grand estates alongside working farms, traditional pubs serving local ales, and market towns buzzing with activity on certain days of the week. It's a county that particularly suits those seeking a peaceful getaway, whether as a couple looking for romantic walks and cosy evenings, or a family wanting space to roam and discover. While we don’t currently have properties geared specifically towards larger groups or dog owners, our Leicester cottage comfortably sleeps four and welcomes you to enjoy the area with close companions.
The appeal of Northamptonshire shifts beautifully through the seasons. Spring brings carpets of wildflowers in its many parks and reserves, and a fresh energy to the countryside. Summer is perfect for long days exploring – think picnics by Foxton Locks or enjoying an afternoon at Wicksteed Park. Autumn sees the landscape ablaze with colour, ideal for bracing walks and pub lunches. Even winter has its charm, with cosy nights in front of the fire after a crisp day out. Visiting during one of the many local food festivals is also highly recommended – it's a great way to sample the region’s produce.

Things to Do in Northamptonshire
Northamptonshire offers a surprising amount for visitors, and while you won’t find an abundance of ‘big ticket’ attractions, the quality of what’s here is genuinely excellent. For families, Wicksteed Park near Kettering is hard to beat. More than just an amusement park, it has a fascinating history as one of Britain's first theme parks, founded by Joseph Wicksteed to provide affordable recreation for working people. Allow at least a full day; there’s something for all ages, from traditional fairground rides to extensive playgrounds and beautiful gardens.
History buffs will be captivated by Foxton Locks. These remarkable canal locks on the Grand Union Canal are a feat of engineering and offer a glimpse into Britain’s industrial past. It's a lovely spot for a walk along the towpath, watching boats navigate the staircase of locks – plan to spend a couple of hours here soaking up the atmosphere. Nearby, Stanwick Lakes Nature Reserve and Heritage Site provides a very different historical experience, with evidence of Roman settlements alongside abundant wildlife and walking trails. You could easily lose an afternoon exploring the lakes and woodlands.
For those seeking a more cultural experience, Royal & Derngate in Northampton is a fantastic performing arts theatre, offering a diverse programme of plays, musicals, and comedy. Check their listings before your trip – an evening performance makes for a great night out. If you prefer the outdoors, Irchester Country Park offers extensive woodland walks, cycle trails, and opportunities to spot wildlife. Sywell Country Park, with its reservoir and surrounding countryside, is another excellent choice for a day of fresh air. Both parks are ideal for families or anyone looking to stretch their legs.
Alongside these larger attractions, smaller parks like The Racecourse Park and East Carlton Country Park provide lovely local spots for a peaceful stroll. Consider packing a picnic and enjoying the scenery! And if you're feeling energetic, Brixworth Country Park is worth a visit too.
