The Fox verdict
Come for walking at the edge of the marshes
Freethorpe pairs a small set of village stops with footpaths into Wickhampton and the open Halvergate landscape.
The short AC101 circuit links Freethorpe and Wickhampton, while the longer Halvergate Mills Trail follows farm tracks and riverbanks past drainage mills. All Saints and the Rampant Horse give the day a historic church and a village local, with Reedham and Strumpshaw Fen adding useful nearby options.

The village story
Freethorpe between village and marsh
Follow Freethorpe from its village stops into the Halvergate marshes, then towards its round-towered church, layered history and nearby Reedham.
The pub and village essentials
Thirty model trains sit on a shelf above the bar of the Rampant Horse, keeping company with pub memorabilia and framed pictures from British films and television. It is a cosy, one-bar village local with a separate restaurant serving home-cooked meals, and it reopened in December 2025 after a spell dark. That reopening mattered here: a parish-council minute a few years earlier had called it the village's last pub, and it has been registered as an Asset of Community Value, the formal way a community says it would rather not lose the place. Dogs are welcome, there is a garden for warmer evenings, and in an 1836 register of electors the same building was recorded as the White Horse.
For everything else the day needs, the Freethorpe General Stores and post office sits at 87 The Green. It is family-run and stocks the practical list — bread, milk, newspapers, magazines, toiletries and snacks, alongside some locally sourced goods. If you are self-catering, this is your bread-and-milk stop before you drive anywhere.
Walks into the marshes
Freethorpe opens onto the Halvergate marshes, where walking is the main draw. The Freethorpe AC101 is a 3.3-mile circuit on country lanes and field-edge paths through Wickhampton, passing the village church, St Andrew's Church and Wickhampton pond. A 1.5-mile option also exists. Both avoid stiles, though the paths can be muddy and uneven. The longer Halvergate Mills Trail covers 7.5 miles of grazing marsh on farm tracks and riverbanks, crossing ditches and dykes and passing High's, Howard's, Lockgate, Berney Arms and Stone's mills. The sixth, Mutton's Mill, also called Manor House Mill, holds the Broads' only surviving internal scoop wheel. Mostly flat ground still brings gates, a stile and two railway crossings; marsh harriers, hares, dragonflies and grazing cattle share the landscape.
All Saints and the Vade Walpoles
All Saints itself is worth the few minutes it takes to look. Its round flint tower is probably Norman, with a conical roof, and most of the building dates to about 1200, though much of what looks medieval inside is a careful Victorian recreation by Anthony Salvin. The octagonal font and the 13th-century south doorway are older. The Vade Walpole family, relations of Robert Walpole, were its benefactors, and in 1871 Richard Henry and Harriet Vade Walpole put up a set of Gothic almshouses on The Green for six poor widows of the parish. The church writer Simon Knott wrote that "All Saints feels a clean, neat, warm church; despite the aisles it is not big, and the square space feels intimate."
A parish layered with history
The parish is long and thin, running west to east into ground that was open water before medieval drainage — part of the Great Estuary of mudflats and shifting channels. Its buried history is stranger than the flat surface suggests: a forged coin of King Offa, an eighth-century gold dinar minted far to the east, a First World War airfield, and a starfish decoy laid out in the marshes during the next war to draw bombs away from real targets.
Connections to Reedham
Reedham station is under two miles off, on the Wherry Lines, with the weekday 73A bus linking the village to Reedham, Cantley and Acle; roads run to Acle and the A47. Reedham is also worth the short hop for its chain ferry, built in 1984, which hauls itself across the Yare with two cars aboard and the marsh going quiet on either bank.
