Wind machinery in a flat Broadland setting

The Wind Energy Museum's scoop wheel stands beside the River Thurne, a working demonstration of historic drainage machinery. Around it stand full-size wind pumps carried here from Britain, America and Australia, a Holmes steam engine and an engineering workshop dated 1912. Ronald "Bob" Morse started the collection in 1947, buying the derelict Thurne tower mill when old mills were being pulled down. "Back then it didn't have a name, it was just Bob saving things," recalls Debra Nicholson, who later ran the place. There is a tea room, an indoor model museum and activities for children.

That flatness is the point of the village. Repps and Bastwick are two small settlements sharing 510 hectares of low, open ground beside the Thurne, with 416 people counted at the last census. The church sits among farm fields; the museum sits on marsh at the water's edge.

Where to eat and drink

The village's own pub, the White Hart, is long closed. Its licence was on record from 1789 until it shut in 1970, a 1969 brewery report finding trade and the living accommodation both poor, though the beer still came from the wood. For a drink you cross the Thurne to Potter Heigham, where the family-run Falgate Inn has two bars, a restaurant, a pool table, darts, live music most weekends and a large garden with an outdoor bar and a children's play area. Dogs are welcome.

Food closer to home comes from the Indian Kitchen, a takeaway at Repps Service Station on the High Road. The menu names a chilli chicken fry coated in crushed chillies, prawn puri, an onion bhajee spiced with fennel and fenugreek, and a sheek kebab worked through with coriander, garlic, ginger and garam masala. The service station is also the village shop and petrol stop, which in a place this size covers most of what you need.

Round-tower church and medieval traces

The Church of St Peter and St Paul — known locally as St Peter's — is worth the short walk for its round west tower, twelfth-century at the base and topped with an ornate late-thirteenth-century belfry, battlements added in the fifteenth century and a brick south porch in the seventeenth. Inside, a fifteenth-century octagonal font carries shields set in quatrefoils, and a plaque remembers prisoners held in the Far East. Over at Bastwick, the medieval chapel of St Peter had already fallen to its tower by 1845; a stone cross base nearby has crouching monks carved at its corners.

The riverside way to Thurne

Walkers have a three-kilometre riverside path from Repps Staithe to Thurne, where the restored mill of 1820 stands white and can be climbed on open days for a view across the whole flat expanse. A circular route from the museum ties the two together. Sanders buses 6 and 6A stop at the Bastwick shelter for Potter Heigham, North Walsham and Great Yarmouth, and the old bridge at Potter Heigham, famously low and narrow, has an average high-water clearance of 1.94 metres (6 ft 4 in).
