Three ways to explore Kilchoan
Signature outings
Ben Hiant's High Ground
Look for traces of Ardnamurchan's volcanic past: Ben Hiant is the remnant of an ancient volcano, with varied igneous rocks around it.
St Comghan's Old Church
The birlinn carved on a grave slab was a symbol of the MacIains, who held Ardnamurchan for some 300 years.
Ardnamurchan Lighthouse
Take in the Small Isles and Inner Hebrides from the viewpoint, then explore the site's foghorn engine room.
The village story
Kilchoan: Along the Bay Beneath Ben Hiant
A West Ardnamurchan township shaped by its bay, community hub, mountain paths and long history of arrival by water.
Hotel, Bay and Township
Kilchoan House Hotel calls itself Britain's most westerly mainland hotel. Its dining room looks towards the Sound of Mull, and the kitchen draws on local produce for a changing menu. Examples include grilled Old Spot pork chops, Ardnamurchan Estate venison steaks, fish and chips and steak-and-stout pie; seafood can include salmon, haddock, mackerel, langoustines and mussels.
Kilchoan is the largest township in West Ardnamurchan, strung along the south side of the peninsula with Ben Hiant rising behind it and the Sound of Mull offshore.
The Community Hub and Provisioning
More than the hotel, the Community Centre is the hub of the village. Built in 1998 to replace an old hall said to move underfoot during livelier dances, it now holds a large hall and stage, a meeting room, showers and the visitor information most people arriving here will want. Inside is Fika Coffee, which makes its own soups, salads, focaccia sandwiches, pastries, cakes and sweet buns. The foyer has a small craft-and-gift shop, West Coast Crafts & Gifts. The play park next door went in in 2012, and the sports field beside it has football goals, a home team, and the Kilchoan Show & Sports every July.
The village shop and fuel station closed in October 2025, and residents are raising money for a community-owned replacement with an EV charger. The Post Office reopened at the Community Centre in August 2026.
The Long Road and the Walking
The village is a long way in. The B8007 runs west from Salen as a single track, and the community reckons on an hour and three-quarters from the Corran Ferry. Shiel Buses route 506 links Kilchoan to Fort William, the practical railhead, though only Monday to Saturday and sparingly. CalMac's ferry crosses to Tobermory on Mull, running through summer 2026 on a turn-up-and-go basis.
Short shore paths trace the bay, and Ben Hiant, the peninsula's 528-metre high point, is a grassy there-and-back climb with steeper, slightly exposed sections near the summit. The summit looks over Loch Sunart and the Small Isles; look for golden and white-tailed eagles, and listen for red deer during the autumn rut. West of Kilchoan, single-track roads lead to Sanna's beaches and, about ten kilometres away, Ardnamurchan Lighthouse, which offers guided tower tours.
Jetty, Poet and Three Churches
Before roads reached Kilchoan, the jetty brought in coal, food and passengers; local volunteers rebuilt the old structure in the winter of 1982. Kilchoan's minister was the father of Alasdair Mac Mhaighstir Alasdair, the Gaelic poet who published a 200-page Gaelic-English proto-dictionary in 1741, became a Jacobite captain and wrote songs used to recruit for Prince Charles Edward Stuart.
There are three churches, after a fashion. The newest opened in 2023, its cross behind the communion table cut from an old pew and another above the door brought from a mission church at Sanna. The one it replaced, a Category B church of 1827–31 by William Burn, kept its galleries and tall hexagonal pulpit; it closed in 2018 and was sold. Older still is St Comghan's, a roofless ruin with 12th- or 13th-century masonry and a window stone dated 1763. In its burial ground two medieval grave slabs survive, one carved with a birlinn, hunting figures and a claymore.
Comghan's Church
Kilchoan's name preserves Comghan's memory through the Gaelic Cill-chomhain.
