Why Stay in Aberdeenshire

Aberdeenshire feels different to much of Scotland. While Highland landscapes are certainly present, here they’re often gentler, rolling rather than towering. This is a county shaped by agriculture and the North Sea; granite buildings gleam silver in the light, reflecting a history rooted in fishing, farming and more recently, energy. It's a place where you can easily spend a day exploring dramatic coastline, then find yourself enjoying an evening meal in a cosy pub that’s barely changed in centuries.

There’s a quiet dignity to Aberdeenshire, a sense of space and unhurried life. The area isn't about frantic activity; it suits those seeking genuine connection with the landscape and local culture. It's wonderful for couples looking for a peaceful retreat, families wanting outdoor adventures without overwhelming crowds, or small groups of friends desiring a restorative break. And importantly, Aberdeenshire is exceptionally welcoming to dogs – we have one pet-friendly property available, allowing you to share your holiday with four-legged companions.

The seasonal appeal is strong throughout the year. Spring brings wildflowers carpeting the fields and longer daylight hours ideal for coastal walks. Summer offers warm (relatively speaking!) evenings perfect for enjoying local produce outdoors. Autumn sees the landscape bathed in golden light, a beautiful time for photography and exploring estates like Castle Fraser. Winter can be bracing but rewarding; the coastline takes on a wild beauty, and you might even catch sight of the Northern Lights. A stay with a hot tub is particularly appealing during those colder months.

Things to Do in Aberdeenshire

Aberdeenshire’s attractions are diverse and often deeply rooted in history. For castle enthusiasts, Castle Fraser is an absolute must-visit. It's not just the imposing structure itself – a wonderfully preserved example of Tower House architecture - but also the intricate walled garden and the stories held within its walls. Allow at least three to four hours to explore properly; it’s particularly suited to those who enjoy wandering and imagining life in past eras. Families will appreciate the wide-open spaces for children to run around, though be mindful of the uneven ground.

The coastline is a huge draw, and a trip to Stonehaven Harbour is essential. This isn't just about admiring the picturesque harbour; it’s about experiencing a working fishing port. You can watch boats come and go, perhaps sample some fresh seafood from one of the local stalls (though options are limited directly *at* the harbour – see “Where to Eat and Drink” below) and soak up the atmosphere. Dunnottar Castle, dramatically perched on cliffs nearby, is an unforgettable sight. It takes around 2-3 hours to explore fully, including walking time from Stonehaven; it's a moderately challenging walk with steps and uneven paths, but worth every effort for the views alone.

For those interested in outdoor activities beyond walking, there are opportunities for cycling along quiet country lanes. The area around Aberdeenshire offers excellent routes, though you’ll need to bring your own bikes. The more adventurous might consider exploring some of the less-travelled coastal paths – always check tide times and weather conditions before setting out.

Evenings in Aberdeenshire are best spent enjoying local hospitality. While large-scale nightlife is limited, pubs offer a warm welcome and often host traditional music sessions (check local listings). Castle Fraser also occasionally runs evening events; it's worth checking their website for details.

Where to Eat and Drink

Dining options in Aberdeenshire are focused on quality over quantity. Stonehaven offers the most choice, with The Marine Hotel being a standout – known locally for its excellent seafood and views overlooking the harbour. It's a good option for a special occasion or a leisurely lunch. However, it’s worth noting that there aren’t many other restaurants directly in Stonehaven. The Carron Fish Bar is a popular choice for takeaway fish and chips; expect queues during peak season.

Unfortunately, our current offering only includes these two establishments within Aberdeenshire itself. However, the surrounding areas do offer more options if you’re willing to travel slightly further afield. Local specialities centre around fresh seafood – Cullen skink is a must-try! The pubs in smaller villages often serve hearty, home-cooked meals using locally sourced ingredients.

Towns and Villages to Explore

Our current property is located within Aberdeenshire itself, offering easy access to the county’s key attractions. The area surrounding the property is characterised by rolling farmland and quiet country lanes. It's a peaceful location ideal for those seeking a rural retreat.

Stonehaven, approximately a short drive away, provides a more bustling atmosphere. The town centre has a selection of independent shops, offering local crafts, produce and gifts. The market is held regularly – check local listings for dates - and features stalls selling everything from fresh flowers to homemade cakes. Stonehaven also makes an excellent base for exploring Dunnottar Castle and the surrounding coastline.

Castle Fraser itself is a little further afield but worth a visit, even if just to wander around the estate grounds. It's a good option for a day trip, particularly if you’re interested in history or architecture. The surrounding area offers picturesque walking routes and opportunities to spot wildlife.

Getting Here and Getting Around

Aberdeenshire is easily accessible by road. The A90 is the main north-south route through the county, connecting it to major cities like Aberdeen and Dundee. From Edinburgh, allow approximately two and a half hours drive; from Glasgow, around three hours. Public transport options are available, but limited – particularly in rural areas.

The nearest train station is Aberdeen, with regular services connecting it to other parts of Scotland. However, reaching our property directly by public transport would be challenging without significant planning and multiple connections. A car is highly recommended for exploring the area independently and accessing more remote attractions. It allows you the freedom to discover hidden coves, explore country lanes and enjoy the flexibility to stop off at local pubs and villages along the way.
