The Fox verdict

Shetland's former capital, still facing the harbour

Scalloway brings a working waterfront and the memory of wartime crossings into one compact visit.

The museum, memorial and Prince Olav Slipway trace Scalloway's role as the main base of the Shetland Bus. Beyond the waterfront, Gallow Hill and the bridges to Trondra and Burra open up a different side of the village.

The village story

Scalloway Village Guide

A harbour village shaped by wartime crossings, a working waterfront and the road to Burra.

Working Harbour and Scalloway's History

Scalloway's history includes Patrick Stewart, Earl of Orkney and Shetland, whose rule ended with imprisonment in 1609 and execution in 1615. The village's waterfront remains a working harbour, with piers and fishing boats.

Scalloway Hotel stands on Main Street overlooking the harbour, with a lounge bar and restaurant serving local produce where possible. The village lies about six miles west of Lerwick, and Bus service 4 links Scalloway with Lerwick.

The Shetland Bus Waterfront

The waterfront also tells the story of the Shetland Bus. From 1941 to 1945, fishing boats and later submarine chasers crossed the North Sea to occupied Norway, carrying agents and supplies in and bringing refugees out. The operation moved its base to Scalloway in 1942. Norway House, a former sail loft, accommodated Norwegian crews; the Prince Olav Slipway was named after the Crown Prince, who visited in October 1942. Forty-four crewmen died. A waterfront memorial to them was unveiled in 2003, and Scalloway Museum holds an extensive collection of Shetland Bus material.

Lives Behind the Crossings

Some of the men stayed. Kåre Iversen took part in more than fifty Shetland Bus missions, married Christine Slater from Scalloway and settled here after the war. Leif Larsen made fifty-two North Sea crossings and became the most decorated Allied naval officer of the war.

Gallow Hill and the Burra Bridges

Gallow Hill rises west of Scalloway; Barbara Tulloch and her daughter are remembered among the last people executed there for witchcraft. Bridges opened in 1971 lead through Trondra to West and East Burra, with Hamnavoe and beaches within an afternoon's outing.

Capital, Rivalry and the Old Norse Bay

Scalloway was Shetland's capital until 1708, when Lerwick took over the role. Authorities ordered Lerwick's early shoreline booths demolished in 1614 and again in 1625 after reports of crime and disorder. Scalloway's Old Norse name, Skálavágr, is usually translated as 'bay with the large house or houses', perhaps referring to an Iron Age broch above the village.
